The garden, the driveway and the garage: the true front line
A burglar targeting a detached house does not just appear in front of a locked door. First, they cross a garden, walk along a driveway, and sometimes skirt around a garage or an outbuilding. It is there, before any contact with a door or window, that much of the decision-making happens: is this house worth the risk? A wireless door and window sensor provides an alert once the break-in has already begun. An outdoor surveillance camera acts proactively, covering the perimeter that the sensor never sees.
What the figures say about home burglaries
The French Ministry of the Interior's statistical service and INSEE recorded 211,400 burglaries or attempted burglaries of homes in 2022, in France excluding Mayotte, representing an average of 5.8 offenses per 1,000 homes.
The SSMSI has also measured the effect of housing type on this rate. Its territorial analysis establishes that the burglary rate is potentially higher in municipalities with a high proportion of houses among their homes: a one-point difference in this proportion corresponds on average to a rate that is 0.06 per 1,000 higher over a year. The gap per municipality is modest, but it always points in the same direction. The detached house, with its multiple access points and its often poorly monitored exterior, deserves protection designed in terms of a perimeter rather than a single entry point.
Why a visible camera changes the burglar's calculation
A meta-analysis published in 2019 in the journal Criminology & Public Policy, conducted by Eric Piza, Brandon Welsh, David Farrington, and Amanda Thomas on 76 evaluations, measured an average decrease of approximately 13% in crime in areas equipped with cameras compared to comparable areas without them. In residential areas in particular, the measured effect is approximately 12%. The explanation has less to do with the camera itself than with its visibility: a device spotted before the act is committed increases the perceived risk for the person considering entry, and a large proportion of burglaries in detached homes remain acts of opportunity, not carefully planned strikes.
An outdoor camera, not a replacement for an opening sensor
The opening sensor remains the only device that triggers a precise alert at the exact moment an access point is forced, whether it is a door or a window, with a very low risk of false alarms. The outdoor camera, meanwhile, covers the space that the sensor does not see: the garden being crossed, the driveway being walked up, the gate being pushed open, and the time spent scouting the house before choosing an entry point. Installing a camera on the facade or near the garage while keeping a sensor on the main door means covering the burglar's path from start to finish, not just their final move.
Where to place it to cover a true perimeter
The HD WiFi outdoor surveillance camera is waterproof, designed to stay outside all year round, and includes intelligent detection that distinguishes movement at the back of the garden from a mere branch moving. It is controlled via a mobile application compatible with ecosystems like Tuya Smart or Smart Life, allowing you to check from your phone what is happening in front of the entrance, in the driveway, or near the garage, without being on site. For a complete perimeter, the ideal is to position it at an unavoidable crossing point: above the front door facing the driveway, or up high on the garage side if it is a frequently used secondary access. On a larger plot, a dummy camera placed at a second strategic point complements the visual deterrent effect at a lower cost, without claiming to replace a real camera on the main access point.
A point of caution before installation
The CNIL (French Data Protection Authority) reminds us that an individual may only film the interior of their property: the home, the garden, and the private access path. Filming public roads is prohibited, including to monitor a vehicle parked in front of your home, and filming a neighbor's garden or pool is just as prohibited. Before securing the final angle, it is therefore best to check what actually enters the frame, especially if the house overlooks a street or a shared driveway.

A visible camera works as a deterrent, just like a dummy camera. To monitor the interior during an absence, see the indoor WiFi camera. And before an extended departure, consider the "Tranquillité Vacances" (Holiday Tranquility) operation.
