Kitchen Fires: The Leading Home Hazard, and How to Reduce It

Poêle noire sur une cuisinière, illustration du risque d'incendie domestique en cuisine

The kitchen is the room least associated with a serious domestic disaster, yet it is where house fires most often start in France. A pan forgotten on the stove, oil heating past its point, a few unwatched minutes: the scenario needs no faulty wiring or rare accident, just an everyday action left unsupervised.

A risk concentrated in one everyday action

According to the Home Safety Observatory (Covéa), France records around 300,000 domestic fires every year, roughly one every two minutes, causing 200 to 300 deaths and close to 1,000 injuries. The kitchen is identified as the main starting point: unattended cooking, oil catching fire, food forgotten in the oven. None of these causes is exceptional, which is partly why the risk stays underestimated day to day.

What kills is not always the flame

A kitchen fire spreads fast, but the real danger is often the smoke, which travels before flames are even visible from another room. Fatal fires mostly happen at night, when occupants are asleep and react too late to get out. This is exactly what the mandatory smoke detector is meant to address: the same source puts the resulting drop in fire mortality at around 25% since it became widespread. The legal requirement and how it works are covered in a dedicated article.

The mandatory detector does not belong in the kitchen

This is something many households get wrong: the smoke detector compliant with standard NF EN 14604 must be ceiling-mounted in a hallway or landing leading to the bedrooms, not in the kitchen itself. For a studio with no hallway, the official rule stated by the French public service site is to place it as far as possible from the kitchen and bathroom, to avoid false alarms triggered by cooking steam. A badly placed detector means either nuisance alarms that get unplugged, or the most exposed room left without direct monitoring.

A phone alert, as a backup

This is where a connected smoke detector fits in, without replacing the mandatory DAAF: linked to WiFi, it sends a smartphone notification as soon as it detects smoke, wherever you are in the home or outside. Useful for a hob left on while picking up the kids from school, or to be alerted from the garden or another room in the house. The SentinHome WiFi connected smoke detector works on this principle, but it adds to the mandatory detector installed according to the rules above — it never replaces it.

Habits that cost nothing

Never leave a pan, a fryer or a dish on the heat unattended, even for a few minutes. Keep tea towels, paper towels and packaging away from the hob. Unplug appliances that are not in use, and clean the extractor hood and its filters regularly, since built-up grease catches fire more easily than people think. These are the same habits highlighted by the Home Safety Observatory, and in practice they matter more than any equipment installed afterward.
