A smart lock is the home security product that generates the most expectations and the most misunderstandings. It is sold as a reinforcement against burglary. That is not exactly where its main value lies, and it is better to know this before equipping your front door.
The real problem it solves: circulating keys
A physical key has a structural flaw: it can be copied, lent out, or lost, and nothing alerts you to it. The set given to a housekeeper three years ago, the spare left with an ex-roommate, the one your teenager misplaced at the gym without telling you: none of these events trigger anything. Your door remains openable by people whose existence you have forgotten.
This is the specific point that a smart lock addresses. A code can be changed in ten seconds. A fingerprint can be deleted. A card can be revoked. The day someone should no longer be able to enter, they can no longer enter, without changing the cylinder or calling a locksmith. For shared housing, seasonal rentals, or homes where third parties intervene, this is a real and immediate change.
The second benefit is more prosaic: you no longer lock yourself out. Between the fingerprint, the code, the card, and the smartphone, you would need several simultaneous lapses of memory to be left standing in the hallway.
What it does not change: the strength of the door
Here is the part that is rarely read on a product sheet. In practice, residential burglary in France does not involve the skillful picking of a cylinder. According to Insee data from the "Living Environment and Security" survey, for 64% of victimized households, a door was forced or an attempt was made to force it. "Forced" means attacked by brute force: crowbar, tearing, pressure on the frame.
Against this modus operandi, electronics play no role. What provides resistance is the bolt, the number of locking points, and the quality of the frame and door jamb. A smart lock installed on a hollow, poorly secured door remains a hollow, poorly secured door, operated by a smartphone. The Ministry of the Interior says as much when it recommends equipping your door with a reliable locking system and double-locking it even when you are home: the issue is the lock and its solidity, not the authentication method.
Questions to ask yourself before buying
Power supply first. A smart lock runs on batteries, and batteries run out. Reliable models provide warning well before they fail and include a backup, but it is a new maintenance constraint for an object that previously required none.
Connectivity next. Depending on the model, a smart lock communicates over Bluetooth, WiFi, or both. With Bluetooth only, your smartphone acts as a key when you are in front of the door, but there is no live remote control: you cannot unlock the door from your office. Unlocking by fingerprint, code or card does not depend on any network: a router or phone outage will not lock you out.
Compatibility finally, and this is the point that causes the most installations to fail: door thickness, backset, and the type of existing lock. These measurements are taken before ordering, not after.
One final reflex, reiterated by the National Gendarmerie and often forgotten: never leave a key in the inside lock of a glass door. No technology can compensate for that action.
Who it is really for
The smart lock is an excellent product for anyone who has an access issue: multiple occupants, regular service providers, short-term rentals, keys that have circulated too much, or simply the desire to be done with a keychain. It is a bad purchase for someone looking to make their door harder to break down: that is a different need, and it is handled differently.
Many installations actually combine both approaches: the lock manages who enters legitimately, and an open sensor signals when the door is opened unexpectedly. One controls access, the other monitors the event.
The matching product
The Bluetooth Smart Lock — Fingerprint, Code, Card & Key offers six unlocking modes, including the Tuya app over Bluetooth and a mechanical backup key, with no hub or subscription. It cannot be controlled remotely in real time: the app works within Bluetooth range of the door. Take your measurements before ordering. The rest of the range is in the catalogue.
